About Opera Houses in Italy

Opera Houses in Italy is an independent, unofficial guide to the theatres where Italian opera was made, built around one question: how do you get inside, and what can you book before you go. We are not a theatre, a festival, a tour operator or the official site of any opera house or booking platform, and we do not operate or personally conduct these tours. You can return to the opera houses in Italy guide at any time.

Why this site exists

Italian opera houses are easy to get wrong as a visitor. La Scala's museum lets you look into the hall from a box only when no rehearsal is on. Teatro di San Carlo shows its auditorium on guided tours that stop on holidays and on stage days. The Arena di Verona plays only in summer, at 21:15, and its cheapest seats are unnumbered stone steps. Many of the evening concerts sold in Rome, Venice and Florence are arias with piano in a church or a palace, which is a good night out but not a staged opera.

So each page starts from what you can actually book, says plainly what each ticket buys, and adds the visiting rules and seasons that decide whether the plan works.

Where the information comes from

Ticket and tour prices, durations, meeting points, inclusions and ratings come from the listings on GetYourGuide and Viator, read directly from the platforms. Visiting hours, tour prices sold by the theatres, dress codes and seasons come from the theatres' and festivals' own websites: teatroallascala.org and museoscala.org, teatrolafenice.it, teatrosancarlo.it, arena.it, teatromassimo.it, operaroma.it, teatrolimpicovicenza.it, puccinifestival.it and the others linked on each page. History comes from those sites and from Wikipedia.

Euro prices are shown in US dollars first, converted at the European Central Bank reference rate.

How it is checked

Prices, schedules and inclusions change, so the figures are re-read on a quarterly schedule and the comparison tables say which quarter they belong to. Performance programmes change every season and are never copied here in full: the theatre's own calendar is the place for casts and dates.

How the site earns

Some links are affiliate links to GetYourGuide, Viator and Stay22. If you book through one, we may earn a commission and your price stays the same. Links to theatres, festivals and Wikipedia are never affiliate links.
